Ten Suggestions for Making Things Count

If you keep reading you will find that there are more than ten suggestions but that’s probably a good thing.  The good ideas need to be shared and to expand to prevent the “bad” things from taking hold.

This poem was written in 2010 but was brought to mind because I’ve been transferring it to my computer in preparation for one day (soon?) publishing a book. The book, that I’ve been told for the past 20 years, that I would write.  So it’s topical for me.  It’s also quite playful in its language and tone.  I find these things helpful.  I hope you do too.

TEN (PLUS) SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING THINGS COUNT

One: Look after Number One.

Look after your own needs first.

Love yourself…

for if you cannot do this you cannot love anyone.

.

Two: Think of others too.

Be compassionate.

Try to walk in another’s shoes before you condemn anyone.

.

Three: Exercise restraint: Leave others free…

to do as they choose.  Respect their rights to make mistakes.

.

Four: Find meaning in your life. Have something to live for.

If you make a difference, your life will add up.

.

Five: Live your life with integrity. If I’ve

learnt anything in my journey it’s that:

“Integrity is all about oneness, wholeness and truth.”

.

Six:  Sex… (now I have your full attention)

and possessions and the physical world do not really matter.

Do not be attached to things.

If you you do not have possessions you will not be “possessed”…

and you will have a better chance of finding

the things that really matter.

.

Seven: Seven is supposedly a lucky number. It’s fine to believe that but it’s_even

better to recognize that we operate under divine law,

and we make our own “luck”.

So, live right, do good things and think and behave positively,

and you will receive good things in return,

This is karma in operation.

It is divine justice, and divine compassion in action.

.

Eight: Eliminate from your life ill-will and h-ate.

Love is unconditional…

You cannot love any one, if you do not love all.

.

Nine: Know when to “ja” and when to say “nein”

Follow your heart. Do no harm to anyone.

(Don’t forget to include yourself!)

.

Ten (X/10): Express your love.

When it is appropriate give someone a kiss (X), or a hug ,1 (O),

or a shoulder to cry on, or a listening ear.

Be gentle and offer your support with kindness and respect.

.

Eleven: Welcome adversity for it is a gift from God.

When life is difficult you are being given chances to

learn and to grow.  Make the most of every opportunity.

Find the right balance and move on.

.

Twelve: Live life to the full. Each earthly life/incarnation is short.

Make every day count. Keep growing and evolving and finding….

.

Thirteen,                                 }        Your own ways to keep

Fourteen                                 }         making your life,

Fifteen                                     }         and our world, better.

Create well my friends.

Till next time, in love and light,

Alan

A Life -NOT- Wasted Away

It’s been a little while since my last post and I find myself posting a different poem to the one that I had intended. Circumstances have conspired or the universe has redirected my energies.

I had intended when I sat down to post either “Compassion and Altruism” (since that was relevant to a discussion in a philosophy group that I attended during the week) or “Help Me to Heal, Oh God”.  However, “Turnip” decided she wanted to lie in my lap, which restricted my access to my poetry files.

I’m glad that I went with the flow and posted this poem as it raises an important issue which is often neglected.  It is also a moving story  and I shed a few tears during this posting.

“A Life Not Wasted Away”

Dear Catena,

On Sunday I bought you a book,second-hand, at a garage sale.

It was called “Eli’s Wings”, and on the cover,it is described as:

“the true uplifting story of a young woman’s will to live”.

I had been wondering how to send it to you.

I was going to ring Lindy to see if you were still alive,

for you have been fighting to die for so long.

But now I know…  you finally have your wish.

I have just been reading the paper,as I usually begin my day.

There I found your story, at the top of page 27,titled “A Life Wasted Away”.

[“The 20-year old Sydney woman died on Saturday,

her frail body weighing just 32 Kg…

….she lost a seven-year battle with anorexia nervosa”

              (Daily Telegraph,Wednesday 11th February, 2009, p27.)]

Catena, as I think you know, I wrote you three poems.

I would have brought them to you myself, if I had been able to…

Perhaps I could have helped…

Instead, I sent them to you.

I told you, you were very much loved.

I told you, you could do so much for others… and I was right.

There on page 27 is a sad article: “A life wasted away”…

But, do you know…that is untrue.

Your life had a purpose, and here is the reason why:

So many thought of, and prayed for you,

and begged you: “Don’t die please”.

Now hundreds of thousands of people

have read about your accursed disease.

“In (New South Wales) there are 500 cases

of anorexia (nervosa) each year,

and 20 per cent die….” **   So you  can see                        ** (Daily Telegraph,

you were just one of many, my dear.                                       11.02.09, p27)

But, you have put a human face on this illness,

and though it’s gaunt  and rather sad,

your face has brought awareness,

and brought good out of what seemed bad.

This face, your face, has been your purpose…..

You have made so many people aware.

Your plight…… your compulsions…… your self-loathing…..

have made so many people care.

Your life has served its purpose,

so now you can be glad.

You have helped so many,

and there’s no reason to be sad.

On Sunday I bought you a book, second-hand, at a garage sale.

I didn’t know you had already died.

The book was called “Eli’s Wings”.

I need not have bothered, for you already have your own.

Angel Catena,  Thank you for your life.

Thank you for your years of suffering.

I am sorry that you didn’t have the chance,

this time around, to live a normal life,

and to have children, and to get married.

But Catena, your life was not wasted.

Your life had meaning, for you helped so many people to learn,

about the suffering that so many others are still going through.

You have made a difference.

God bless you, angel Catena.

In love and light.

Alan

Till next time live purposefully and make this world better.

Be the best version of yourself that you can.

God bless,

Alan

Everything That You Do is Important

Everyone is important.  We are all on our individual journeys of discovery and spiritual understanding.  Do not compare your journey to that of anyone else: for it is individual and unique to you.  It really does not matter what anyone else is doing, for everyone else has their own individual journeys and learnings (lessons).

What matters in so far as anything matters is that you embrace your journey and your spirituality as fully as you can.  Hopefully, you can find some inspiration in the following poem which was written in 2009.

If you are uncomfortable with the use of the word “child”, as I was when I wrote it, please remember that you are a child of the divine (God).  We all are.

Everything That You Do is Important

Everything that you do is important.

The food that you consume at breakfast is the source

of your physical nourishment for the start of your day.

Do not be distracted by thoughts of what may lie ahead of you in your day.

.

Savour your food.  Taste each mouthful.

Chew thoroughly to aid proper digestion.

Be in the moment. Live this moment to the full,

for it is the only one that is real.

.

Everything that you do is important.

Consider the words that you speak before you utter them.

Do they come from your heart?

If not, do you really need to say them?

.

Do not think that every moment in a conversation must be filled with words.

Sometimes there is a need for truthful silence…

Think about that.

.

Everything that you do is important.

Each breath that you take helps to sustain you.

.

How is your breathing?

Are your breaths slow and deep, filling your whole diaphragm?

Are you aware of your breathing?  Or, are you just going through the motions?

.

What is your haste child?

Take your time…  Breath deeply… and fully.

Be aware of your breathing.

.

Everything that you do is important.

Each thought that you have is a creative interaction with the world.

Each thought has constructive power… to create and build a better world…

or to destroy and tear it down.

.

Let each thought that you have be peaceful… and energizing…

and full of well-being.

.

Your life is precious, child.

It is a jewel of value beyond all estimation.

Do not roll it in the mire, or lose it through a careless action.

.

And most important of all… do not lose it through mindless inattention…

wasted moment after wasted moment.

.

Everything that you do is important.

Do what you must do… now… in this moment,

and let the next moments follow as they will…

one moment at a time.

God bless.

Shine Little Droplet, Shine

I believe we are all like droplets of the divine (consciousness), merged in a cosmic “ocean”.  If this sounds strange to you please take it as hyperbole or as an over-the-top allusion.  This poem was written in 2016.  I will mention before we start that I have used a rather clumsy word-form “al(l)ways” because I wanted to suggest both always (eternity) and all ways (all inclusiveness).

Shine Little Droplet, Shine

Walk lightly on the Earth. Dance joyously with others.

Sing with all the power of your breath…

and all the love in your heart.

.

Peace is our natural state of being.

Our souls vibrate in harmony with all beings

and resonate with truth.

.

There is no god but god.

The divine power reigns supreme.

The divine permeates and radiates from…

and expresses… all that is.

.

God is one…  God is all…

God is infinite…  and immanent…

and eternal…  al(l)ways.

.

Know that you are just one miracle… on one ball of rock

in one solar system, in one galaxy…

and you are so very small.

Yet, you are complete…  and you are perfect…

just as you are.

.

You are a perfect expression of the divine power, Itheshe.

You are just one drop in a vast, eternal ocean…

but, you are divine.

In you is all the essence…  all the perfection,

and expression of God…

.

You are remarkable.

Now is the time to be…

that wondrous, shiny pearl

in God’s omnipresent ocean.

.

Flow, little droplet, flow.  Be that faultless pearl.

Be the holy…  shiny being of light and love,

that is who you truly are.

.

Be at peace…

Give up your “littleness”…  and your illusions.

You are not a body…

You are not separate…  or alone.

You are intimately connected to all beings…

and to God.

.

Shine, little droplet, shine.

Dance and sing and shine!!

.

God bless.

.

Thanks for reading.  If you are unfamiliar with the expression “Itheshe” and would like to understand its use, please read the explanation at the end of  my last post: “The Creator’s Prayer”.

I wish you a peaceful, productive week.  Keep creating positively.  Things will improve soon.

In light and love,

Alan

The Creator’s Prayer

This entry needs a little introduction and although it stands alone, it is part of a longer poem called “Itheshe and the ‘Absolute’ Truth”.

It is one of two poems, along with “The Planet of Peace”, which I most wanted to share when I first began thinking about sharing some of my work. I hope that it can be seen as an expression of moving beyond religious thinking into “true” spirituality.  This is my humble attempt at such.

It obviously takes its form from “The Lord’s Prayer” which remains one of the world’s treasured prayers.  I know many people who use it as part of their religious and healing practices, and for protection.

Whilst I do not want to diminish the pleasure and/or the solace that “The Lord’s Prayer” affords, I offer this as a prayer for a new age and a “new” way of thinking. This new poem comes from seeing the divine differently, in that God is perceived not as a separate being to be appeased, but as the omnipresent force that creates all beings and all things, and is our true essence.

I am a little uncomfortable with the title “The Creator’s Prayer” because it really is a prayer for, or to, “The Creator” rather than a prayer supplied by a divine being (cf. “The Lord’s Prayer”). However, I decided not to change the title to maintain its “power” and to keep its allusion to its “source”.

This poem stands on its own and to avoid distractions in its consideration I have removed the facility to comment on it on this page. Sorry.

Please consider.

The Creator’s Prayer

Our Creator,

whose nature… is Love…

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy realm exists.

Thy power and Love manifest on Earth,

as elsewhere in heaven.

.

Thank you for our daily bread,

and all the bounties of creation.

Help us to let go of all condemnation,

and to love all beings,

just as you love us.

.

Lead us into Divine awareness,

and welcome us into bliss.

For ours is the kingdom,

filled with your love and compassion.

.

For ever and ever,

Amen

.

The third and final part of “Itheshe and the ‘Absolute’ Truth” concludes with the words:

Thank you Itheshe.

God bless.

At some time in the near future I will post the original poem in its entirety so that it may be placed into a proper context.

Similarly I will explain (again?) the use of “Itheshe”.  I have constructed this word to counterbalance the common misrepresentations of God as “male” or “female” and to prevent using the word “it” as an alternative, since “it” is used to describe any inanimate or non-gendered object.

I felt the need to use a different word since God is all-embracing and Itheshe is found in all beings, whether female, male, or non-gendered, and in all other things. I have attempted to recognize this all-encompassing nature of the divine with this “new” word.  Since God embraces all neutral, male, and female beings and things, it seems appropriate (or at least I hope tolerable) that a word for God should be formed from “It”, “He”, and “She”.

[While it is true that I have “created” this word, I am sure that others have used the same or similar expressions.  It is remarkable how many people think (independently) of the same “new” ideas.]

Thanks for reading.  I hope you have derived some benefit even if it is only how some other “crazy” person sees the world.

If “The Creator’s Prayer” resonates with you please feel free to use it and share it with all your loved ones.

May the divine (Itheshe) be with you always and keep you safe.

God bless.

Alan

I Have All I Need

It has been too long since my last post and I apologize if anyone has been disappointed (or even noticed).  I could make excuses and say I have been very busy, but the truth is I just haven’t prioritized this blog sufficiently.  I can’t say I haven’t had the time for “I have all I need”.

It’s interesting that I had been wondering about which poem I should post and I had decided to go with this one. When I opened up my site to write I was greeted with an ad for a post titled “Give me meatloaf”.  Certainly, the universe or the divine or God, is abounding with synchronous connection and humour.

I should point out that this poem was written eight and a half years ago, and I have moved twice since then. Hopefully it still has some relevance.

I Have All I Need

I have enough.  I have all I need.

I would like more, but I am not ready,

for I do not appreciate everything I have.

.

I have a roof over my head. It may be a little mouldy,

and peeling in places, but it keeps me warm on these cold, winter nights.

It keeps out the rain and the wind.  I do not have to huddle around fires,

or under bridges to survive.

Thank you for the roof over my head.

.

I have enough food to eat, brought from countries all round the world.

I can eat different foods each day of the week, if I choose.

And I have enough.  Sometimes I have to go into debt,

to pay for my groceries, but I always have enough to eat.

.

Let me never say “I’m starving” again.

Let me remember those people who really are starving.

They are often living in refugee camps and fleeing natural or man-made disasters.

Let me be grateful for the abundance I already have.

.

Have you noticed how often many of these people smile…

grateful to be alive… grateful for the smallest of gifts,

or the simplest act of kindness.

It is humbling.

.

Almighty God,

Help me to remember all the things I have.

Help me to remember, that I have nothing to complain about.

Help me to be grateful.

Help me to cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

.

Help me to be willing to share my belongings, as so many others are already doing.

Help me to appreciate the things that are really important in life.

.

So what if I do not have a recordable DVD player, or an up-to-date car.

I have life.  I have shelter.

I have family and friends who love me.

All my needs are being met.

.

God, help me to appreciate all these gifts…

for I am truly blessed.

And when I do fully appreciate the things I have,

I can stop wasting my time and my thoughts,

in idle speculation and dreaming.

I can get on with living my life in the way I know I should:

living simply, with a smile on my face

and helping others who are less fortunate.

.

As the old saying goes:

“When someone needs a smile… give them one of yours.”

For a smile can be infectious…

and perhaps, one day… we will all be infected.

.

God Bless.

Thanks for reading.  I am endeavouring to post blogs at least weekly, and hopefully bi-weekly from now on.

May the divine walk with you and take you to where you need to be.  Go with the divine flow, always.

Do Not Be a People-Pleaser

Howdy! I hope 2017 has started off well for you.  It should be an exciting year as numerologically it is a “1” year – a time for new beginnings.  I’m sorry that it has taken a while to post this poem as promised. Previously I had saved it as draft and I mistakenly thought I had posted it.  Still every thing happens at exactly the right time. (The following few paragraphs are from my previous introduction.)

It is time to post another of my poems and I am endeavouring to provide my readers an indicative sample of both, the range of subject matter and philosophical directions of my poetry.

This poem has had some positive feedback when I have shared it and it offers what I hope is practical advice.  It seems particularly timely because at this time of the year many people, especially women, put enormous pressure on themselves, trying to make sure things are “just right”.

I hope you enjoy this and it helps you to be peaceful in “the silly season”.

Do Not Be a People-Pleaser

Do not be a people-pleaser.

Do not bend over backwards, to keep others happy.

Don’t be so anxious to meet others’ needs, that you’ve anticipated their “needs”,

before they’ve even realized that they have them.

.

This behaviour is harmful… to you… and to them.

It is harmful to them because they do not have to struggle.

They do not have to deal with the vagaries of this world.

.

Struggling, and setting goals and meeting them are vital steps for each person’s development.

When you meet a need for someone else you deprive that person of the growth,

that comes from struggling to make their dreams come true.

.

When you hand things to another on a plate, it is akin to royalty being served by servants.

How is this healthy for them?

How is this healthy for you?

.

You are so busy meeting others’ needs that you do not even know what your own are.

You have a compulsion to make others happy…

a compulsion to keep the peace…

to prevent any eventuality which could bring an uproar.

.

Where are you in all this?

When will your needs be met?

.

So what if there are some harsh words?

So what if others are unhappy?

.

Peace comes from balance…

Peace comes from within…

You cannot make another person peaceful…

no matter how much you want to…

or how much you care.

Thanks for reading my blog and for a little time sharing my world.

I wish you and all your family and friends and acquaintances and “strangers” (those friends you haven’t met yet) a wonderful peaceful and loving Christmas and New Year holiday season.

Let us all help to make 2017 better and more peaceful and more equitable for the world.

In love and light,

Alan
