It’s been a little while since my last post and I find myself posting a different poem to the one that I had intended. Circumstances have conspired or the universe has redirected my energies.
I had intended when I sat down to post either “Compassion and Altruism” (since that was relevant to a discussion in a philosophy group that I attended during the week) or “Help Me to Heal, Oh God”. However, “Turnip” decided she wanted to lie in my lap, which restricted my access to my poetry files.
I’m glad that I went with the flow and posted this poem as it raises an important issue which is often neglected. It is also a moving story and I shed a few tears during this posting.
“A Life Not Wasted Away”
On Sunday I bought you a book,second-hand, at a garage sale.
It was called “Eli’s Wings”, and on the cover,it is described as:
“the true uplifting story of a young woman’s will to live”.
I had been wondering how to send it to you.
I was going to ring Lindy to see if you were still alive,
for you have been fighting to die for so long.
But now I know… you finally have your wish.
I have just been reading the paper,as I usually begin my day.
There I found your story, at the top of page 27,titled “A Life Wasted Away”.
[“The 20-year old Sydney woman died on Saturday,
her frail body weighing just 32 Kg…
….she lost a seven-year battle with anorexia nervosa”
(Daily Telegraph,Wednesday 11th February, 2009, p27.)]
Catena, as I think you know, I wrote you three poems.
I would have brought them to you myself, if I had been able to…
Perhaps I could have helped…
Instead, I sent them to you.
I told you, you were very much loved.
I told you, you could do so much for others… and I was right.
There on page 27 is a sad article: “A life wasted away”…
But, do you know…that is untrue.
Your life had a purpose, and here is the reason why:
So many thought of, and prayed for you,
and begged you: “Don’t die please”.
Now hundreds of thousands of people
have read about your accursed disease.
“In (New South Wales) there are 500 cases
of anorexia (nervosa) each year,
and 20 per cent die….” ** So you can see ** (Daily Telegraph,
you were just one of many, my dear. 11.02.09, p27)
But, you have put a human face on this illness,
and though it’s gaunt and rather sad,
your face has brought awareness,
and brought good out of what seemed bad.
This face, your face, has been your purpose…..
You have made so many people aware.
Your plight…… your compulsions…… your self-loathing…..
have made so many people care.
Your life has served its purpose,
so now you can be glad.
You have helped so many,
and there’s no reason to be sad.
On Sunday I bought you a book, second-hand, at a garage sale.
I didn’t know you had already died.
The book was called “Eli’s Wings”.
I need not have bothered, for you already have your own.
Angel Catena, Thank you for your life.
Thank you for your years of suffering.
I am sorry that you didn’t have the chance,
this time around, to live a normal life,
and to have children, and to get married.
But Catena, your life was not wasted.
Your life had meaning, for you helped so many people to learn,
about the suffering that so many others are still going through.
You have made a difference.
God bless you, angel Catena.
In love and light.
Till next time live purposefully and make this world better.
Be the best version of yourself that you can.
